This portable version of
Whatever I Like was part of the exhibition,
Dongxi Things curated by Ulrike Johannsen (Kunstverein, Baden, Austria, 2010). For the previous version of
Whatever I Like (Pickled Art Centre, Beijing, 2007), I compiled photos of people wearing English-language message t-shirts in Beijing. I transposed a sampling of these messages to three stenciled wall texts echoing the once ubiquitous wall-text propaganda paintings of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 70s. For this version, I made three prints representing each of the original wall-text paintings. A selection of 82 of the source t-shirts along with a list of all the t-shirt texts are included in the accompanying small-format book. For book purchase see
